With historic streets, castles, lush forests and epic scenery, the Firth of Forth is a popular film location. So popular, that Visit Falkirk and Visit West Lothian have formed Film on Forth to highlight film locations and suggest itineraries. Check out some of the locations below.
Culross
Near North QueensferryOutlander Series: The burgh is the fictional village of Cranesmuir and the palace garden is the herb garden of Castle Leoch. The town was also a scene of the Jacobite encampment and makeshift hospital scenes in season two. It doubled as the location of Balriggan Cottage where Laoghaire and her daughter Joan lived in season four.
Other credits include; Kidnapped (1971, starring Michael Caine), The Little Vampire (2000 starring Richard E Grant), Bollywood film Kyun! Ho Gaya (2004) and The 39 Steps (2008).
Aberdour Castle
Near North QueensferryOutlander Series: Aberdour Castle doubled as the fictional monastery where Claire and Murtagh took Jamie to recover after his ordeal at the prison; the Old Kitchen and Long Gallery were used for filming.
Blackness Castle
Near South QueensferryOutlander Series: In seasons one & two of Outlander, Blackness Castle poses as Forth William and the headquarters of Black Jack Randall.
Other credits include; Mary Queen of Scots (2018) and the Netflix film about Robert the Bruce, Outlaw King (2018).
Linlithgow Palace
Near South QueensferryOutlander Series: The entrance and corridors were used as Wentworth Prison (where Jamie was jailed).
Other credits in Linlithgow include; Bruce's castle and chapel in Robert the Bruce, Outlaw King (2018).
Bo'Ness & Kinneil Railway
Near South QueensferryOutlander Series: The scene featured as the wartime London station where Claire and Frank said their goodbyes in the very first episode.
Hopetoun House & Midhope Castle
South QueensferryOutlander Series: Hopetoun House was where scenes in the stately home of the Duke of Sandringham were filmed in season one. It was also the backdrop for Parisian streets, the spare room in Jamie and Claire’s Paris apartment, and the Hawkins Estate in season two and Ellesmere and the stables at Helwater in season three. Midhope Castle featured as several locations in seasons one to three, including Lallybroch, the home of the Frasers.
